At Musicworks Canada, we’ve always believed that music has the power to uplift, inspire, and transform lives. From teaching students of all ages foundational concepts and theories to helping experienced achievers find their next level, we know that learning helps change lives. We’re proud to not only put that belief into action here in Canada but also to take the wonderful power of music abroad to transform lives with Musicworks Africa, a volunteer teaching initiative that brings music and education to children in South Africa.

For over 15 years, our Musicworks Africa program has served as an incredible reminder that when young people are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and express themselves, the results can ripple far beyond a single lesson! We’re proud to lend a helping hand to those across the globe, and best of all, for those who are part of the Musicworks family as a student, teacher or family member, you’re connected to this incredible cause.

What Is Musicworks Africa?

Founded in 2009, Musicworks Africa is a volunteer program that provides music education to underprivileged children in South Africa. Through a longstanding partnership with African Leadership—one of the continent’s largest charitable organizations—the initiative serves youth from ages 3 to 17, offering lessons in violin, guitar, ukulele, and vocals.

Musicworks Africa also supports academic learning in subjects like math, science, and coding, giving students a strong foundation for future success. These programs are made possible by volunteer instructors, many of whom are high school students from Canada who travel to Africa during the summer.

A Summer Camp With Purpose

Each year, Musicworks Africa runs an intensive summer camp that becomes a transformational experience for both students and volunteers. Training begins in the fall for selected volunteers with specialized workshops that help them learn valuable teaching, leadership and communication skills alongside cultural awareness to help them connect and succeed once they arrive in South Africa.

Once camps begin, our volunteers teach daily classes and lead fulfilling activities that support education, empowerment, and confidence for students. Local meals, transportation, and housing are included in the camp experience, with volunteers covering their flights and a modest daily cost.

Our camps are a unique opportunity for Canadian students to challenge themselves, step outside their comfort zone, and see firsthand how music and education can make a global impact. With one in three Africans living below the poverty line, it’s also a profound opportunity to understand more about the world around us and lend a supportive hand to those across the globe.

A Shared Mission: Education, Empowerment, and Community

What makes Musicworks Africa so meaningful is how closely it reflects the values we live by daily here at home through Musicworks Canada. We know that when students are supported in both academics and the arts, they become more resilient, confident, and motivated. We see it in our Canadian classrooms, and Musicworks Africa brings that same vision to life in communities with far fewer resources.

Musicworks Canada students have long been known for their high achievement, from top scores on RCM exams to awards at national competitions. In fact, many of our alumni go on to become instructors themselves, passing on their knowledge and passion to the next generation! Through Musicworks Africa, that legacy now extends around the world.
